Get in the game!
April 23, 2009
Ole Miss baseball is in full swing and the students are loving it! Last weekend I went to a game with some friends and we grilled out in right field as the sun set. What a great way to spend your time (plus it’s free for students – yay!)
While watching the Ole Miss Rebels are great, there are other ball games on campus this time of year that I like going to even more – intramural softball games. Even if you’ve never played ball before in your life, whether you’re a guy or a girl, good or bad, you can round up your friends, create a team, and play other teams of students after class.
These games are fun for a couple of reasons:
One – You get a chance to play and/or you know the people who are playing! If you played baseball or softball in high school, but decided not to play in college, here is your chance to flex the old muscles and have some fun. Other, like me, can bring lawn chairs, a blanket (most games are at night so it gets a little chilly), and even signs to sit on the sidelines to enjoy a friendly game.
Two – There is no pressure. No one is on scholarship. There is no real prize at the end for winning. It’s just for fun. Some teams make their own “jerseys” like the team I saw on Tuesday night, composed of all boys in tie-dyed shirts with numbers written on the back in black permanent marker. Other teams just come in whatever they wore to class that day. It really depends on whatever you and your friends want to do.
Three – The games only last one hour. They are long enough to enjoy the company of your friends and get a sports fix, but short enough so that they don’t take away precious study time as the semester winds down and exams rapidly approach.
Unfortunately, the team I was rooting for, “Sandy Water” (the teams pick their own names – I think this one was an inside joke), did not make the play offs. In fact, they lost all of their games, but you could never tell by how much fun they were having. No tears were shed.
I’ll still be out cheering on the Ole Miss Rebels come next home game. Maybe they’ll have better luck than my softball team did!
